7 Nickelodeon Shows From the 90’s That Slime You with Nostalgia.

In today’s world of oversaturated media, I doubt that the youth of today will be looking back 20 years from now on the things that made their childhood great (or bearable in some cases) with such unanimous nostalgia and comfort. This uniting familiarity could very well be behind us due to the fact that it is now 100x easier (yes this number was conceived from a rigorously tested algorithm and it is indeed precisely 99.996x easier) to create, produce and execute a vast multitude of media. Therefore giving its viewers today such a wide range of options, thus spreading out its enamored audiences so thin relatively to the point where you have less “cult-classics”.
In the nineties you chose from a few hundred shows, not a few thousands, which put the majority of people on the same page so that years later we all look back and can relate acutely to our experiences growing up. It’s kind of sad when you think about it, but on a positive note there is now a lot more competition and competition breeds refinement and ultimately better choices (hopefully). That’s the idea anyhow.
Thankfully us 80’s/90s babies can all recall these programs from our childhood and re-live warmth they bring just simply in remembrance.
1. Double Dare
“I’m going to ask you a question, and if you don’t know the answer, or think the other team hasn’t got a clue, you can dare them to answer it for double the dollars. But, be careful, because they can always double dare you back for four times the amount, and then you’ll have to either answer that question or take the physical challenge.”
Enough Said.
2. You Can’t Do That on Television
This show started what was to become Nickelodeon’s famous trademark of Green Slime and it is still seen today in the Nickelodeon programing. Now, I was just a little too young to recall the show’s exact premise but I know for a fact I watched it with my older brother (most likely whilst in a drooling and mumbling (adorable) baby stooper) because just this scene brings that solid rush of nostalgia we all love.
3. Rocko’s Modern Life
Do you remember in the episode “Canned” where Rocko worked for a hotline and the instructions on the wall behind him reminded all employees to “Be Hot, Be Naughty, and Be Courteous” while he dryly repeats “Oh baby” into the phone? These shows were FILLED with sexual innuendos! The episode “With Friends Like These” was cut from the network all together but I am sure it can still be found somewhere on the interwebs.
4. Are You Afraid of the Dark?
“Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, I call this story…”
Probably my favorite show on television during the nineties. I still remember getting all “set up” with a blanket, some popcorn and there might have been a stuffed animal of sorts…maybe.
5. Nickelodeon GUTS
I played the Super Nintendo version of this for hours; oh the envy of the one who wins that faux glowing piece of the Aggro Crag.
6. Ren and Stimpy
To this day I do not know why I loved this show. I remember many episodes had violent, gruesome, and suggestive scenes even for today’s standards. One episode in particular “Man’s Best Friend” was even canceled by Nickelodeon for its violent content.
7.The Secret World of Alex Mack
Even back then I believe people were ashamed to admit they watched this show, but I did, every episode. Does anyone remember which now-famous actress played Alex’s first school rival?
If I missed any, leave them in the comments below!
